Title: Clear Sunscreen: How Light Interacts with Matter
Url: https://nanosense.sri.com/activities/clearsunscreen/
Publisher: SRI International
Description: The NanoEd Resource Portal, a “dynamic repository for information dissemination, research and collaborations among the community of nanoscale science and engineering education (NSEE) learners, teachers and researchers,” provides this classroom activity focused on nanoscience, energy and light. In this lesson, students learn how light interacts with matter, and what variables contribute to the interaction. Student learning objectives are included at the beginning of the lesson to provide a context for what students will gain from these activities. Five lessons make up the content of this activity. The lessons are as follows: “Introduction to Sun Protection,” “All About Sunscreens,” “How Sunscreens Block: Absorption,” “How Sunscreens Appear: Scattering,” and “Culminating Activities.” Each lesson contains an overview, teacher materials, PowerPoint slides and notes, and student materials available in PDF format. This is an excellent resource, which can be easily adapted into your classroom.
