Title: Pathology Case Study: Acute Renal Failure
Url: https://path.upmc.edu/cases/case241.html
Creator: Johnson, Douglas R.
Publisher: University of Pittsburgh. Dept. of Pathology
Description: The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Department of Pathology has compiled a series of case studies to help both students and instructors. In this particular case, a 71-year-old man was admitted with “acute renal failure with heavy proteinuria following a several month history of ill-defined renal disease”. The patient’s detailed history, which includes creatinine and urine protein levels is found in the “Patient History” section. The following tests were performed on the patient: renal core biopsies, bone marrow biopsy, renal ultrasonography, and an abdominal CT scan. Those test results are all included in the case study to aid in your understanding of the patient’s diagnosis. The “Final Diagnosis” section provides the official final diagnosis of the patient and a detailed description provided by the contributing doctors. This is an excellent resource for students in the health sciences to familiarize themselves with using patient history and laboratory results to diagnose disease. It is also a helpful site for educators to use to introduce or test student knowledge of renal pathology.
