Description: The Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia (RFE) was developed by the US Food and Drug Administration "to help federal, state, and local officials and purchasers of seafood identify species substitution and economic deception in the marketplace." As such, the RFE is a compilation of data in several formats (including photographic and imaging parameters, specific isoelectric focusing, DNA sequence patterns, protein patterns, and taxonomic authentication) "that assists with the accurate identification of fish species." Fish and other seafood types are listed by common, regional, market, scientific, and family names, and the site also provides images of some whole fish and market cuts. Additional detailed scientific and taxonomic information is available for some species, but researchers will find the site's varied techniques for identification most useful.
