Description: This tutorial describes how accurate surveys of the Earth's surface can reveal information about earthquakes and movement along faults. Topics include earth movements discovered after the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake, the elastic rebound theory, and how the locations of four survey stations and the angles and distances of the lines in between them can be used to determine motion of the Earth's surface. There is also information on research efforts using the Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure crustal motion.
