Title: Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network
Url: https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/science-areas/stressor-impacts-mitigat...
Publisher: Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research
United States. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Description: This website features the Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network, an organization dedicated to promoting a better understanding of harmful blooms by way of volunteer monitoring. Volunteers are instructed on algae identification and sample on a weekly/biweekly basis throughout the coastal southeast, reporting their data to researchers at the Marine Biotoxins Program. Results from volunteer groups enable researchers to identify problem areas to isolate for further study. A volunteer-based monitoring network enables researchers to maintain and monitor an extended survey area throughout the year. The site includes an introduction to harmful algae, a species list with light microscope images, a list of sampling sites and data sets, and information about volunteering and submitting data. Links are provided to the Marine Biotoxins Program and the Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research. An extensive resource page includes lesson plans, books, newsletters, videos, and more!
